“Tutte le grandi opere sono nate da grandi passioni, tutti i grandi personaggi della storia sono stati animati da grandi passioni. Michelangelo, quando lavorava al Mosè o alla Cappella Sistina, era ossessionato dalla sua opera. Alessandro Magno, nella sua avanzata fino ai confini detta Cino e in India, viveva una ininterrotta ebbrezza di conquista che talvolta si traduceva in eccessi. Ma lo stesso avviene ai grandi filosofi, ai grandi scienziati. Galileo e Newton vivevano momenti di esaltazione: sentivano di aver scoperto il linguaggio di Dio. Sono ancora più violente le passioni ideologiche e politiche. Leggendo gli scritti giovanili di Marx vieni afferrato dall’onda del suo odio e ancor più succede col Mein Kampf di Hitler. Gli uomini politici capaci di trascinare le masse hanno sempre emozioni violente e una determinazione fanatica. Una immensa energia che travolge ogni ostacolo.
In alcuni casi le vocazioni sono precoci, ma altre volte questi personaggi vanno alla ricerca della propria strada a tentoni, tanto da apparire ora stupidi ora folli. L’energia, la volontà di potenza e la sete d’amore vengono prima del loro oggetto, prima di essere rivolte a una meta, prima di trovare la propria forma e diventare chiamata. Nietzsche dice che l’arte è una danza in catene, se togli le catene hai solo scatenamento caotico. Ma il confine fra l’energia e la sua forma è sempre labile, sempre sul punto di essere superato. Motti pittori, molti musicisti rock si sono dissolti nelle droghe. In altri casi avviene come una scissione. Simenon era meticoloso, scriveva con assoluta regolarità, il suo commissario Maigret è sposato, abitudinario, privo di ogni erotismo. Ma lui, Simenon, si abbandonava a eccessi di sessualità sfrenata. E quando, come in Aristotele, S. Tommaso o Michelangelo la passione si esprime tutta nell’opera, hai sempre l’impressione di un titano incatenato.
Torniamo al punto di partenza: senza passione non si fa nulla. L’innamorato che fa mille chilometri per baciare la sua amata non è un folle, ma un saggio, perché ha capito che l’amore è darsi totalmente. Ma senza una meta, senza un progetto, senza la guida della volontà, il fuoco della passione diventa cenere. Questo è il problema educativo della nostra epoca. Accendere e conservare negli adolescenti e nei giovani la passione, ma dar loro una meta, una disciplina, trasformarla in vocazione”.
